Injuries finally caught up with the 3A #1 Riley County girls as Silver Lake knocked off the Falcons 50-44 on Saturday night in the substate finals at St. Marys.  Riley County lost three starters this season including Makayla Vargo in the substate semifinals on Friday night, along with Bree Busch and Morgan Godinet.  Silver Lake built a small lead in the second quarter, and never gave it up the rest of the way, making 18 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter.  Mackenzie Freeman scored 18 points and Perry Krogman had 14 points for the Eagles.  The Falcons were…

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP)   Billy Butler hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Texas Rangers 6-1 Sunday in the exhibition opener for both clubs.  Butler hit an 0-2 pitch from Colby Lewis over the fence in left-center field.  Lorenzo Cain, who went 2 for 2, opened the Royals’ four-run fifth with a double off left-hander Michael Kirkman.  Luis Mendoza, a candidate for a spot in the Royals’ rotation after leading the Pacific Coast League with a 2.18 ERA, went two scoreless innings.  He allowed a single and walked one.  Mitch Moreland homered…

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State jumped on Pacific early with seven runs over the first two innings, and the Wildcats received another quality start from senior Kayvon Bahramzadeh as the Wildcats defeated Pacific, 9-3, Sunday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Rodney McGruder was selected to the All-Big 12 second team and senior Jamar Samuels was chosen to the honorable mention squad, as the league office announced its annual Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball Award on Sunday. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Jamar Samuels was named the Phillips 66 co-Big 12 Player of the Week on Sunday after averaging a double-double in wins over Texas A&M and Oklahoma State last week.
