Authorities are investigating a theft reported late Monday night in northwest Manhattan. Riley County Police say it happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Crescent Drive, a few blocks north of Amanda Arnold Elementary School. A 34-year-old woman accuses a person known to her of entering her home and stealing a safe. The estimated loss totals about $1,350. No arrests have been made. RCPD is continuing to investigate. A four-vehicle crash Monday evening in northern Riley County sent two people to the hospital and left two others with minor injuries. The Kansas Highway Patrol says it happened just before 6 p.m. at U.S. Highway 24 and West 59th Avenue after one driver rear-ended a stopped vehicle, triggering a chain reaction. According to the crash report, an eastbound vehicle struck another eastbound vehicle that was stopped and waiting to turn left at the intersection. A Manhattan man was arrested Sunday afternoon on a warrant for failure to appear in court, according to the Riley County Police Department. Damond Russell, 25, was taken into custody at approximately 4:18 p.m. on Oct. 19 in the 600 block of 3rd Place. The warrant was issued by Riley County District Court and stems from original charges of domestic battery and possession of marijuana. Russell was issued a total bond of $20,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.
Riley County police are investigating two separate reports of fraud involving gift card scams reported on Friday, Oct. 17. In the first case, officers responded at approximately 11:19 a.m. in Manhattan, where a 70-year-old woman reported being contacted by someone falsely claiming to be a law enforcement officer. The caller told the victim she had missed jury duty and instructed her to purchase gift cards to resolve the matter. The woman complied, resulting in a reported loss of approximately $3,000. Two people were hospitalized following a head-on crash Friday afternoon near the intersection of 4th Street and Fort Riley Boulevard, according to the Riley County Police Department. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 4:14 p.m. on Oct. 17, where a 2011 GMC Terrain driven by Chassity Rathke, 49, of Council Grove, collided head-on with a 2019 Mercedes driven by Tiffany Massenburg, 40, of Manhattan. Kamahl Bobian was scheduled for resentencing in Riley County District Court, but now will wait until Dec. 1 to hear his modified sentence. His appearance was postponed for unknown reasons. Bobian, a Manhattan man, was convicted Nov. 3, 2023 of the first-degree murder of his wife as well as aggravated burglary and two counts of violating a protective order. Judge Kendra Lewison sentenced Bobian to 50 years to life for the first-degree murder of Shanell Bobian at their home on Sept. 25, 2021.
