The Riley County Health Department recently received $35,000 from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services to assist with suicide awareness and prevention work. Funds will be used as stipends to hire at least 20 ambassadors to deliver a presentation to community groups in Riley County, which is a collaboration with the Flint Hills Volunteer Center Suicide Prevention, Awareness, Compassion, Training (PACT) program. It will feature video testimonials from local residents and provide tools to help recognize when someone may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. The health department says additional information is needed to create the presentation and training materials.…

A Manhattan man was arrested Thursday on a Riley County warrant stemming from a February incident at a Manhattan apartment. The Riley County Police Department says 28-year-old Edwin Gonzalez faces two charges of kidnapping including an aggravated count and one count of aggravated battery. Gonzalez and 29-year-old Cecilia Chavez, also of Manhattan, are accused of holding two men at an apartment in the 700 block of Allison Ave., while armed with a shotgun. The two also reportedly hit the men several times. Gonzalez remains jailed on a $50,000 bond. Chavez was arrested in connection to the case on Feb. 19.
Tavian Garrett, 26, of Junction City was arrested on June 1, 2023, around 2:00 p.m. on his Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. This warrant stems from a violation of probation from an original charge of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. Garrett was issued a total bond of $10,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report. A new restaurant and craft brewery is coming to Manhattan and is set to open one of its two locations later this year. Owned by Manhattan natives Ryan and Amber Emley, the Aggieville Brewing Company will service two locations at 612 Pillsbury Drive and 1123 Moro Street. According to a Thursday release, the Pillsbury location will house a brewing production facility and taproom, in addition to a dine-in restaurant. A Manhattan man is jailed following a domestic disturbance near the intersection of S. Manhattan Ave. and Fair Lane Wednesday morning. According to a Riley County Police Department investigation, 18-year-old Darryl Klemick is accused of threatening to shoot a 43-year-old man and prevented him from leaving a residence by standing in front of his car, taking the key and refusing to give it back. Klemick was also found to be in possession of stolen opiate pills and drug paraphernalia. A man with a lengthy criminal record in Kansas, again failed to appear in Riley County District Court Thursday. 43 year-old Desie Martez Chatfield was due to appear in person for a probation violation, eventually appearing via Zoom, which Judge Kendra Lewison noted was not approved and a no-bond bench warrant was issued. Chatfield said he was unable to physically travel to Manhattan and was scheduled to start rehab tomorrow (Friday).
