The Kansas Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to slow down and respect work zone signage after a high-speed traffic stop in a construction zone last week on I-70, near Junction City. According to a social media post from the agency, a KHP trooper was monitoring traffic in the area Friday morning when a driver sped through the construction zone at 100 miles per hour in a posted 60 mph zone. David Nelson, 40, of Lawrence, KS was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for two counts of forgery, two counts of making false information, two counts of computer unlawful acts, theft, and attempted theft on July 15, 2025, at approximately 4:55 p.m. The warrant stems from two incident which were reported in April 2025. Nelson was issued a total bond of $30,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. Wareham Hall’s $40 million renovation project got a major boost Tuesday night as the Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved a package of incentives. Commissioners authorized industrial revenue bonds and a 10-year, 100% property tax abatement for the project, which will also receive up to $6 million in federal historical tax credits to go along with state historical credits. The project will also receive a $350,000 cash incentive as a reimbursement from the city for planned future public infrastructure improvements, which will be paid out of a combination of sales tax and transient guest tax dollars. A Manhattan man was killed Monday when his semi truck veered off the road and crashed into a cornfield. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 54-year-old Donnell Martin was westbound on US Highway 36 in rural Doniphan County just before 6:30 p.m. when the truck exited the roadway to the north, struck a culvert and fence and continued into a cornfield. By Rose Gruenbacher Riley County commissioners on Monday considered a 2026 budget which would create a 10% increase in property taxes for the average homeowner. The proposed county mill rate is 39.981, an increase of almost 2 mills from 2025. A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in assessed, taxable property value. A homeowner who paid $436.34 in property tax on a $100,000 home in 2025 would pay $481.68 on a home now worth $105,000 in 2026, using the county’s 5% average property tax increase for existing single-family homes.
