LIBERAL, Kan. — A Kansas woman won a narrow victory over her counterpart in England in the traditional Pancake Day race. Whitney Hay of Liberal, Kansas, ran the 415-yard course in 1 minute, 7 seconds on Tuesday. That beat Katie Godof of Olney, England, who ran her race in 1 minute, 10 seconds. The annual trans-Atlantic pancake-flipping race between Olney and Liberal began in 1950. It wasn’t held last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Hay, a 21-year-old student at Southwestern College in Winfield, also won the Liberal segment of the race in 2020 but Olney won that year’s race.…

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities say a suspect in the fatal shooting of a North Carolina bus driver has been arrested in Kansas. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced Tuesday that detectives found 21-year-old Darian Dru Thavychith through a collaboration with federal and state authorities. Police in Kansas say Thavychith was arrested without incident at a Shawnee gas station. Thavychith is charged with murder and shooting into occupied property in the death of Charlotte Area Transit System bus driver Ethan Rivera on Feb. 11. At a court hearing Tuesday, Thavychith agreed to be extradited to Charlotte.

WICHITA, Kan. — Two off-duty police officers in Wichita found a baby unharmed in the back seat of a car that had been stolen from a Walmart parking lot. Television station KAKE reports the theft happened Tuesday afternoon. The officers were off-duty and working at a business on Pawnee Street when they learned of the car theft with the 11-month-old baby still in the car’s back seat. The pair began patrolling the area looking for the car and found it abandoned a short distance away with the baby still in the back seat. No arrests have been reported in the…

The Riley County Fish and Game Association will be holding their annual ART Auction and Feed. Ben Jedlicka, Riley County game warden, tells KMAN the event will have food from Ricky’s of Hanover as well as plenty of entertainment. “The entertainment is a silent auction where there is a lot of things donated and they’re on the table and you go around and put a bid down, and then there is a live auction.” He adds that it is a great opportunity to support the Riley County Fish and Game Association, which is involved with several things around the community.…

After breaking ground in September of 2020, Sunset Zoo is nearing the completion of Expedition Asia. Melissa Kirkwood, marketing and development coordinator, tells KMAN the grand opening of the exhibit will be April 9. She says sloth bears, tigers, and leopards will be the main animals taking home in the new exhibit. “We couldn’t be more excited to be giving these animals new environments, and to give the community huge new exhibits and creative exhibits to see these animals,” Kirkwood adds. Members of the Manhattan community came together Tuesday night to show solidarity for the Ukrainian people, following the Russian invasion of the country last week. A candlelit vigil and prayer were held at triangle park.  Olga Volok, one of the event organizers, is originally from Ukraine and has been living in Manhattan since 1996.  She says the purpose of the vigil and march is to show solidarity with Ukraine. Volok was surprised at the sizable crowd gathered to show their support for the Ukrainian people.  The vigil began with a speech from Volok and other Ukrainian immigrants in Manhattan, as well…

WICHITA, Kan. — The energy company BP says in new court documents that it wants to appeal a judge’s ruling allowing residents of Mulberry to sue over sharp hikes in natural gas prices last February. The Wichita Eagle reports BP filed two court documents in the last week that indicate it wants the lawsuit dismissed. One seeks permission to appeal Chief District Judge Lori A. Bolton Fleming’s decision on Feb. 8 to let the lawsuit proceed. The second document outlines BP’s belief that it cannot be sued by residents of the town.
