The Flint Hills Veterans Coalition continues to encourage people to join their mission. The FHVC purpose is to promote patriotism throughout the community. They host veteran’s day events in Manhattan, as well as taking part in several other outreach programs. Chuck Sexton, FHVC president, talks more about their cause. “Just helping as many vets as we can, because it’s all about veterans and veteran related causes, as well as patriotism in the Flint Hills,” Sexton says. “That’s what we were established to execute and that’s what we were established to do.” The largest event of the year for the FHVC…
(Kansas State Athletics) – K-State kicks off the 2022 baseball season Friday at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown in Arlington, Texas, as the Wildcats will take on Arizona, Michigan and Auburn over three days at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers. K-State will meet Arizona on Opening Day at 3 p.m. UA is ranked as high as No. 10 in the national college baseball polls while K-State is receiving votes in the preseason NCBWA poll. Riley County commissioners unanimously approved to add an ambulance to the northern part of the county. The commission gave EMS administration the go ahead to start the process for building a new ambulance station. This includes finding an architect, position requests, and determine where to put the station. “To me, it’s obvious that we need to put a station up there, we have ARPA money. It will basically just need a small house and an oversized garage. We have a chance to do that now,” says Commission Chair Greg McKinley. MANHATTAN, Kansas (Kansas State Athletics) – K-State women’s basketball student-athlete Ayoka Lee continues to add to her trophy case, as she was named a 2022 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VII First Team selection on Thursday. This is the second straight season Lee has garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. As a program, K-State women’s basketball has earned 25 CoSIDA Academic All-District VII citations by 15 student-athletes. As a first team selection, Lee advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team selection process, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in mid-March. The final design of the Manhattan Regional Airport’s new runway cut over $7 million off prior cost predictions. Manhattan City Commissioners Tuesday unanimously voted to authorize the runway rehabilitation project to open for bids once final Federal Aviation Administration funding is awarded later this year. Olsson Associates’ Diane Hofer told commissioners the savings come as a result of an FAA-approved design alternative that had previously been rejected. “So, not only did we save about $7 million, we cut construction time by about two to three weeks.” The alternative involves using less material for the runway’s base course, though overall more…
INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — A 20-year-old Coffeyville man has been sentenced in the shooting death of a woman in southeast Kansas. The Kansas Attorney General’s office said Benjamin Mason was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 25 years. He pleaded no contest in December to first-degree murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old Kimberly Meeks. Investigators say Meeks was killed on Dec. 14, 2019, while walking with another man along Main Street in Independence.
WICHITA, Kan. — A Wichita woman who fatally shot a man accused of beating her adult son with a baseball bat has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison. The Wichita Eagle reports that a judge on Wednesday sentenced 43-year-old Amber Ahrens for the 2020 shooting death of 53-year-old David Leddy. Ahrens had pleaded guilty in November to second-degree murder and a weapons count in Leddy’s death. Police have said the shooting happened June 17, 2020, after Ahrens’ 19-year-old son and Leddy had fought earlier in the day. Ahrens has said she shot Leddy in the head after…
