During their Tuesday work session, Manhattan City Commissioners continued their discussions of the 2024 budget. The proposed general fund sits at approximately $45.3 million, an increase of nearly $6 million compared to last year’s budgeted amount. Assistant City Manager Jared Wasinger explained the greatest impacts on the budget. Mayor Mark Hatesohl voiced concerns that the 2024 budget is over $16 million higher than the budget for 2021. The new Morgan Family Arena will be opening to the public this Saturday for the first time. An open house will be held just before the team’s scrimmage at 2 pm. The arena will be home to Kansas State’s volleyball team who is moving into the arena after spending 45 years at legendary Ahern Field House and then three years at Bramlage Coliseum. Marcia Rozell, director of Visit Manhattan, on the open house on Saturday. The open house follows an equipment sale by K-State Athletics from 8 am to 1 pm in the sports complex.
A week into fall camp, K-State coach Chris Klieman says some newcomers are making impacts. Addressing media for the first time since practices began last week, Klieman was asked about the remnants of conference realignment, specifically the impacts on the future non-conference schedule as non-conference contests with Arizona and Colorado are going to come off the books. K-State was scheduled to host Arizona next fall and visit Tucson in 2025 then host Colorado in 2028 after visting Boulder in 2027.
K-State’s pre-season practices continue with 25 days until kickoff but one major piece is being held out for the time being. Coach Chris Klieman says offensive lineman Christian Duffie has been sidelined with an injury. Duffie has started 35 consecutive dating back to the 2020 season, which is the longest current streak on the team. He started all 14 games at right tackle in his junior campaign last fall. For the second time in less than a week, a police report was filed for criminal damage to property at a Manhattan school. The Riley County Police Department says it took a report Monday at Bergman Elementary School after an unknown suspect damaged two fence gate doors and two metal security doors at the school. Damage is estimated at $5,000. Police also noted a break-in at Manhattan High School Aug. 1 and are seeking the public’s help identifying a suspect in that incident. (K-State Athletics) – Kansas State senior Will Howard was one of 35 quarterbacks in the nation to be named to the initial watch list for the 2023 Davey O’Brien Award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Tuesday. Howard is the first Wildcat candidate for the award that goes to the nation’s best quarterback since Jesse Ertz was a preseason candidate in 2017.
