Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said investigators believe the puppy’s death was a targeted attack against the officer. The police department is offering a $1,000 reward for information in the case. The suspect or suspects could face felony animal cruelty and trespassing charges.

WASHINGTON — Unusually warm temperatures and a storm system moving east linked to the La Nina weather pattern helped create the conditions necessary for the monstrous tornadoes and severe weather that tore through parts of the the Midwest and South. Tornadoes in December are unusual, but not unheard of. Scientists say figuring out how climate change is affecting the frequency of tornadoes is complicated and their understanding is still evolving. Still, they say the atmospheric conditions that give rise to such outbreaks including rising temperatures, moisture, and wind shear are intensifying as the planet warms.

LABETTE COUNTY, Kan. — Voters in southeast Kansas managed to do something state law makes difficult when they voted earlier this month to recall their county commissioner. The vote to remove Labette County Commissioner Brian Kinzie from office won’t be official until Monday, but he has conceded that he lost the race. The campaign against Kinzie was based on the fact that he violated Kansas’ open meetings act when he had a phone conversation with another member of the three-person county commission. The Kansas Attorney General’s office investigated that. And recall petition organizers also raised concerns about whether Kinzie’s family…

The Las Vegas Raiders were last seen in Kansas City taking a victory lap around Arrowhead Stadium in their team buses, and they decided it was wise to stomp on the Chiefs’ logo at midfield shortly before kickoff Sunday. They probably regret both of those ideas. Patrick Mahomes threw his first two touchdown passes in nearly a month, Clyde Edwards-Helaire added two more scores on the ground, and the Chiefs’ suddenly stingy defense forced five turnovers in rolling to a record-setting 48-9 victory over the Raiders that kept them comfortably atop the AFC West. “You don’t want people coming into…

James Akinjo had 16 points with seven rebounds and second-ranked Baylor defensively dominated No. 6 Villanova 57-36. The victory likely will put the defending national champion Bears in the top spot in the new poll. The 9-0 Bears never trailed in the rematch of an NCAA Sweet 16 game last March. Villanova shot only 22% and scored its fewest points in 689 games played for two-time national champion coach Jay Wright. Baylor moved into position to become the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 when Purdue lost to Rutgers on Thursday night. T.J. Otzelberger became the first Iowa…
