Story from K-State Research and Extension news service MANHATTAN – Kansas Farm Bureau has announced a pledge for the largest donation in its history to support a plan to build and renovate agricultural infrastructure at Kansas State University. KFB officials announced they will provide $5 million over five years to support the K-State College of Agriculture’s Innovation Centers for grain, food, animal and agronomy research, a project totaling $125 million to improve several facilities on the north end of its Manhattan campus. A 20-year-old Fort Riley man who police say tried to kill a former K-State football player stood mute at his Monday arraignment in Riley County District Court. Joshua Cummings is accused in the December 2021 shooting of Reed Godinet and pistol whipping another man in an Aggieville bar, facing charges of attempted first and second degree murder as well as aggravated battery and assault. The National Night Out Event is Tuesday evening, and RCPD Lieutenant Scott Hajek invites all to attend. He says members from Riley County Police, Fire, EMS, Emergency Management, Manhattan Fire, and Fort Riley will be in attendance. Public Hearings were held Monday for the Riley County 2023 budget, with commissioners ultimately approving the $80.5 million in estimated expenditures. There was a change to the County Fire District #1 budget due to a timing issue with publication. The ad valorem taxes-required rate therefore dropped from 8.153 to 7.633. The Revenue Neutral Rate requires ten days public notice but that isn’t necessary when lowering the rate. Budget and Finance Officer Darrel Edie commented on that.
