TOPEKA, Kan. — Authorities are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy in Topeka. City spokeswoman Gretchen Spiker said emergency responders were called around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. The child then was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the boy’s name hasn’t been made public. His cause and manner of death remain undetermined.

Design work on the Manhattan Regional Airport runway renovation project has passed 60 percent completion, says outgoing Director Jesse Romo. “The [federal] infrastructure bill did pass […] late Friday night,” Romo said to Manhattan’s Airport Advisory Board Monday. “So hopefully with that came enough funding in the FAA that they will feel a lot better about making sure they participate at 90/10 for the runway project and not just try and cap the grant.” The runway project has been in the works for years, with the 40-year-old surface seeing signs of erosion. Riley County employees may potentially be required to comply with a vaccine mandate from two different government agencies. County Counselor Clancy Holeman told commissioners Monday that preliminary information was released Thursday from the the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These rules are for entities covered by either Medicare or Medicaid. The deadline for this mandate is December 5th. Full compliance would be required by January 5th. Riley County EMS provided information about response times and calls for service for the northern part of the county Monday. EMS Director David Adams spoke about this topic as part of the new building process for EMS. Data points shared Monday included call volume, response times and criticality of calls in the area from January 2020 to the present. Criticality of calls is determined to be if responders were using lights and sirens on the way to the call and hospital. WICHITA, Kan. — One teenage girl is dead and another wounded after an argument turned into a shooting in Wichita. Police say the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Sixteen-year-old Brandi Williams was found unresponsive in the front yard of a home and died at a hospital. An 18-year-old female was also shot but was treated at a hospital and released. Police say several people were at the home when an argument broke out involving the girls and two boys, ages 14 and 16. The boys allegedly began shooting. NEWTON, Kan. — Authorities in Harvey County say a 66-year-old Wichita man died when a recreational vehicle rolled off its safety equipment and onto him. The accident happened Saturday afternoon, killing Robert Brooks. Harvey County authorities say Brooks was making repairs to the RV that was partially lifted off the ground with a floor jack and wheel chocks. Brooks was underneath the RV when it rolled onto him. Another person called 911, but Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.
