DERBY, Kan. — A former Kansas middle school teacher who was caught with more than 250 images and videos of child pornography has been sentenced to three years of probation. The Wichita Eagle reports that 40-year-old Cody Chitwood also must register as a sex offender for 25 years under the sentence imposed Monday. TOPEKA, Kan. — An investigation is underway after a jail detainee was found dead at the Shawnee County Adult Detention Center in Topeka. The Shawnee County Department of Corrections says 58-year-old Curley Charles Anderson Jr. was booked into the jail on Friday on charges that included aggravated battery, driving while license suspended and reckless driving. At 4:14 p.m. Monday, authorities were alerted to a medical emergency and Anderson was found unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. WELLINGTON, Kan. — Ruby the K-9 officer for Kansas game wardens may be pushing 10 years of old, but her sniffer works just fine. That was evident earlier this month when Ruby played a key role in tracking down a man wanted by police in the south-central Kansas town of Wellington. The Riley County Police Department’s use of force numbers increased slightly, between 2019 and 2020. Captain Josh Kyle addressed the Riley County Law Board Monday, regarding the analysis of the Use of Force Report. There was a 6% increase in total use of force incidents and a 4% increase in applications of force from 2019 to 2020. RCPD assumes this may be due to a new accreditation standard, that calls for reporting each time a taser is pulled. TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation told state lawmakers this week that it has received 215 tips about Catholic clergy sexual abuse and opened 122 cases. KBI Executive Director Robert Jacobs told lawmakers a task force set up to investigate clergy abuse has reviewed almost 40,000 records since its work began in 2019. LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — A 37-year-old Leavenworth man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of a man who was hit by a motorcycle. Justen Michael McCarter also pleaded guilty Friday to possession of stolen property. Prosecutors say McCarter was driving a stolen motorcycle and speeding in March 2020 when he hit Adam Wheeler, who was crossing a Leavenworth street. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 19.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The person who ran an Overland Park day care was fired after police began investigating allegations of child abuse at the center. A spokesman for The Learning Express said Sunday that the franchise owner of the location in Overland Park was fired for “failing to meet our standard of care.” The Kansas City Star reports that the independently owned day care is a franchise location of the Deerfield Beach, Florida-based company.
