(AP) — A Goddard police officer shot and killed a man after he refused numerous orders to drop a weapon and began walking toward the officer with a weapon that was later determined to be a replica BB gun, authorities said. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said 39-year-old Michael James Trask, of Lake Afton, died in the shooting near Goddard on Tuesday. At their meeting Tuesday, the Manhattan City Commission approved the first reading of an annexation ordinance to acquire a 78.73 acre piece of land west of the Manhattan Regional Airport for eventual commercial development. The land currently borders the Random Woods residential neighborhood. Multiple residents voiced their concerns and frustration to the board concerning the ambiguous description of what will be built on the land. Olsson Engineer Mark Bachamp said site preparation will take a significant amount of time. Manhattan City Commission will consider a possible annexation of land owned by Midwest Concrete Materials, Inc. near the Manhattan Regional Airport, when it meets Monday evening. The city would annex the land, currently referred to as the “Landing Business Park”, so that it falls under the jurisdiction of the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board and could then be developed for commercial use. Hundreds of community members gathered inside the Manhattan Conference Center Friday for the 98th Annual Chamber of Commerce Meeting and Celebration. This year, the chamber had lots to celebrate after 2022 delivered some record breaking statistics. Chamber President and CEO Jason Smith highlighted some of those numbers. 2022 Chamber Board Chair Summer Ott Dierks said one of last year’s most impactful decisions was diversifying their board.
