WICHITA, Kan. — A Wichita police officer fatally shot a man Sunday who pointed a gun at officers after refusing to follow their commands. Wichita police Capt. Jason Stephens said officers were called to the 41-year-old man’s home after a woman told a local convenience store clerk that the man was threatening to harm her and himself and that the man was wanted by police. Stephens said Jess Jackson died after an officer fired four shots at him after he pointed the gun. TOPEKA, Kan. — Some local Kansas governments are operating with 10% of their positions unfilled, making it hard to deliver the services that citizens expect. Across the state, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that Kansas has seen a 4.7% drop in the number of public sector workers, which translates into about 12,000 vacant jobs, but some towns are being hit harder. HAYS, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a man from central Kansas has died in a head-on crash near Hays. The patrol said the crash happened around 10:15 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 183 south of Hays, killing 56-year-old James Kohl, of Schoenchen. Investigators say Kohl was driving a car northbound on the highway when a southbound pickup truck entered his lane while trying to pass a vehicle. Officials say Kohl died at the scene. The driver of the truck a 20-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Senator Roger Marshall spoke to members of the community during his town hall over the weekend. Marshall heard from members of the Manhattan community and their concerns about current topics. LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Federal authorities say two former prison guards at Leavenworth Detention Center have been indicted by a federal grand jury on counts accusing them of smuggling drugs and other contraband into the prison. A news release Thursday from the U.S. Department of Justice says 25-year-old Jacqueline Sifuentes, of Laredo, Texas, and 29-year-old Cheyonte Harris, of Raytown, Missouri, were both indicted Sept. 22. Sifuentes was arrested Tuesday and is charged with bribery, conspiring to commit bribery and provide contraband, and providing contraband to an inmate. LAWRENCE, Kan. — Police have recovered a stolen panel from a Native American art exhibit at the University of Kansas, weeks after other panels in the exhibit were vandalized. One panel from the art installation outside the Spencer Museum of Art was reported stolen on Wednesday. University police Deputy Chief James Druen said the panel was found on Thursday and police are speaking to a person of interest in the case. WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities say preliminary autopsy results show that a 17-year-old youth who died after being restrained at a Kansas juvenile facility didn’t suffer any injuries that would have been life-threatening. Law enforcement officials said Thursday they are awaiting a toxicology report as they investigate the circumstances surrounding his in-custody death last weekend. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says the early results of the autopsy found only scratches and a bruise on Cedric “CJ” Lofton’s body. Lofton’s cause of death is undetermined.
