Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. That is the message shared by the state’s commissioner of education, Dr. Randy Watson who stopped by Oliver Brown Elementary Tuesday as part of the Kansans Can Success Tour. Ascension Via Christi has updated some of its visitation measures. The Manhattan hospital announced this week that labor and delivery patients will be allowed two people during labor. Patients having a Caesarean section will be allowed one support person during the procedure. After delivery one support person will be permitted to stay throughout mom and baby’s stay. Elsewhere, patients undergoing outpatient procedures or testing (including same-day surgeries, Cath Lab or GI/Endoscopy procedures) will be allowed one visitor during their care. The director of Kansas State University’s A.Q. Miller School of Journalism has officially announced his retirement at the end of the school year. Dr. Steven Smethers publicly announced his decision Monday as part of KMAN’s In Focus. The long time educator is also being inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame for more than a half century of service to the industry and the state of Kansas. White Canyon residents met with Riley County commissioners Monday to discuss road improvements in the area. Residents are requesting to set up a benefit district for the county to improve Baldwin Park Road, with the residents sharing the costs of maintenance.  Resident Dana Nayduch says part of the road before the area is a county road. Residents are asking for improvements to Ramp and Main Roads to have access to Baldwin Park.  The benefit district for the road would encompass around 3,400 feet, with estimates at around 147 thousand dollars. Riley County commissioners voted 2-1 to cancel the asbestos removal for the First Christian Church building. Commission Chair John Ford brought up the idea during Monday’s meeting, citing the unknown future of the property due to its historical designation. Ford also is troubled with the having to ask permission for any improvement or demolition projects done to the building. He would rather have the $18,000 allocated for something else until they have a better vision. Commissioner Greg McKinley was against cancelling the project, saying they could add the expenses on to the price of the property if they sell it.…

Riley County commissioners presented a plaque to the Riley County Police Department to commemorate the new firing range. Commission Chair John Ford presented the plaque to Director Dennis Butler, Captain Josh Kyle, and Captain Kurt Moldrup for their hard work getting the range completed. Butler thanked Ford, county staff, the current commission, and former commissioners who helped with the project. He says no one person can take credit, as it was a team effort. WICHITA, Kan. — Firefighters say crews found the body of a 50-year-old man inside a burning home on the east side of Wichita. The fire was reported around 9:45 a.m. Monday, when firefighters where called to the home just south of the Crestview County Club. Arriving firefighters first put out flames that had overtaken the home’s garage, then moved into the home to extinguish several small fires. Crews found the man’s body inside the home. Sara Hart Weir said in an email to supporters on Monday that she plans to bring a “conservative, outsider approach to problem-solving.” Weir joins state Sen. Caryn Tyson of Parker, state Rep. Steven Johnson of Assaria and former adviser to Gov. Sam Brownback Michael Austin in seeking the Republican nomination for treasurer.
