At least one local health care leader is growing frustrated with a lack of trust of professionals regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. Ascension Via Christi – Manhattan President and CEO Bob Copple says physicians are giving advice on a number healthcare issues, but still have patients not listening to expert advice when it comes to COVID. Copple says it is better to get medical information from a professional in the community, rather than a stranger on the internet. For him personally, Copple says he has had conversations with his staff about the social justice teachings of solidarity and the common good.…
Leonardville’s annual Hullabaloo returned Saturday and did not disappoint those who came out for a day of festivities. Things actually kicked off Friday evening with a beer garden and ranch rodeo and continued into Saturday. It included food trucks, food and craft vendors, a barbecue dinner as well as an ice cream social. Activities included a turtle race, train rides, community garage sales, a vintage car show, an antique tractor show and parade and a tractor pull. The Hullabaloo is sponsored by the Leonardville Lions Club and promoted through Leonardville PRIDE.
ATCHISON, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Missouri man died after being run over while trying to chase a rolling, driverless pickup truck and trailer. Television station KAKE reports that the accident happened around 2 p.m. Thursday in a driveway off U.S. Highway 73 in northeastern Kansas. Investigators say 61-year-old David Richardson, of St. Joseph, Missouri, was on foot chasing the runaway truck and trailer when the vehicle jackknifed and hit him. The patrol says Richardson died at the scene.
TOPEKA, Kan. — A Topeka man who fled to Mexico in 2017 after being accused of rape has been convicted in the case. A jury on Thursday found Daniel Arreola guilty of seven felony counts. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said Arreola forced his way into a woman’s apartment in July 2015 and raped her at gunpoint. He fled to Mexico in February 2017, four days before his trial was scheduled to begin. He was arrested in Mexico and returned to Kansas in August of 2019 and has remained in custody since. Arreola’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 15.

(AP) — Most Kansas counties lost residents over the past 10 years as the state’s population concentrated in more populous places, including the Kansas City area, new census figures released Thursday showed. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s once-a-decade count of the nation’s population showed that 80 of the state’s 105 counties declined in population since 2010, 16 of them by more than 10%. Most of those counties were rural. Five of the top 10 fastest-growing counties were in or close to the Kansas City metropolitan area. The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized the Manhattan Housing Authority (MHA) for its renovation of the Apartment Towers near 5th St. and Leavenworth St. Through the use of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds, the Better Building Initiative and a loan obtained with assistance from the City of Manhattan, MHA was able to improve the energy efficiency of the public housing facility.
