LINN COUNTY, Kan. — Four people from Texas died when their pickup truck hit an icy patch on a highway about 75 miles south of Kansas City and rolled. The Kansas Highway Patrol said the crash happened Friday morning along U.S. Highway 69 in Linn County. A crash report said Larry Klingensmith, 66, lost control of the 2019 Dodge Ram after it hit the ice, and the truck veered into a ditch. WICHITA, Kan. — A civil lawsuit has been filed over the jail suicide of a Wichita man charged with killing an elderly Army veteran. KAKE reports that the suit, which was filed Friday, alleges that Sedgwick County commissioners and the sheriff are at fault in the death of 36-year-old Austin Stewart. He was found dead in his cell in May 2019 of self-inflicted asphyxiation. Stewart was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and theft in the November 2018 beating and asphyxiation death of 88-year-old Floyd Gilbert. Three Manhattan High wrestlers won regional titles Saturday and a total of eight qualified for the State 6A meet this coming weekend. Easton Taylor at 138 pounds, Tucker Brunner at 152 and Talique Houston at 220 pounds won titles in their weight classes as Manhattan finished fourth in the regional in Wichita as a team. Wamego will send six wrestlers to the 4A state meet, including Hayden Oviatt, who won the regional title at 195 pounds. Riley County had two state qualifiers, Rock Creek one.
KSHSAA finalized its brackets for the Class 1A sub-state tournaments Sunday morning, setting up games this week for three of the four 1A Division I teams in the area. The Frankfort girls will host Onaga Friday night, seeking to move on to a matchup against second-seeded Doniphan West a week later. Also on Friday, Blue Valley-Randolph play at Lincoln, with the winner advancing to face Clifton-Clyde the following week. Thursday will see the Blue Valley-Randolph boys host Washington County. Arraignment was held Friday for a Wamego man charged with possessing child pornography. Scott Hertzig entered a plea agreement in Pottawatomie County District Court for two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The two counts are alleged to have occurred in April 2021. Judge Jeff Elder presided over the hearing, informing Hertzig of what he is waiving by entering a plea agreement. Sentencing will take place at 2 p.m. April 21st at the Pottawatomie County Justice Center. Hertzig will be required to register as a sex offender. The Manhattan Conference Center was full Friday night for the 97th annual meeting and banquet of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce. Over 200 area business people, philanthropists, local and state representatives attended the event to dine, acknowledge 2021 award recipients and hear from the new Chamber Board of Directors chair.
