Manhattan’s two middle school recreation centers will be reserved for youth activities for a few hours in the afternoon on school days, part of a new partnership between the city and the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan beginning Monday. The Boys & Girls Club will utilize space in the facilities at Anthony and Eisenhower Middle Schools between 2:45 and 5:30 p.m. those days – otherwise remaining open to the public during normal hours on those days and all day on weekends and non-school days. (AP) — A Kansas woman will be tried again in the death of a 9-month-old boy at a home day care, despite a Kansas Supreme Court ruling on Friday that let stand a ruling reversing her conviction. The Douglas County District Attorney’s office said Friday it would proceed with a second trial for Carrody Buchhorn, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the Sept. 29, 2016, death of Oliver “Ollie” Ortiz at a Eudora home day care, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday upheld the conviction and sentence of a Wichita woman accused of beheading her ex-boyfriend’s mother. Rachael Hilyard, 40, was convicted in 2020 of first-degree murder in the killing 63-year-old Micki Davis three years earlier. She was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 50 years. Prosecutors said Davis was killed after she and her grandson went to Hilyard’s home in Wichita to collect some of her son’s belongings. She was attacked as the 9-year-old boy ran for help. Riley County police made a trio of arrests in Manhattan after conducting a search warrant on Colorado Street. RCPD reported officers found what they called a significant amount of meth in a residence in the 1300 block of Colorado Thursday. Antwine Berry was taken into custody, accused of possession and distribution of meth within 1 thousand feet of a school. Kristanna Hill was arrested on charges of possession and probation violation. (AP) — A former police officer was charged Thursday in a series of sexual crimes that occurred between 2012 and 2018 while he worked for the Hutchinson, Kansas, police department, authorities said. Todd Allen, 51, who was a Hutchinson police officer for about 20 years, was charged with 24 counts, including 17 felonies involving multiple charges including rape, kidnapping and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, The Hutchinson News reported.
