FEMA has announced federal disaster assistance has been made available to 53 Kansas counties affected by the Dec. 15 severe storms and straight-line winds. Federal funding is available to the state, eligible local and tribal governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities. Riley, Clay, Geary and Wabaunsee counties are all part of that major disaster declaration. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. The Flint Hills Veterans Coalition continues to encourage people to join their mission. The FHVC purpose is to promote patriotism throughout the community. They host veteran’s day events in Manhattan, as well as taking part in several other outreach programs. With his team readying to face Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon, Kansas State women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie and his wife Shanna announced publicly that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Mittie said yesterday afternoon on KMAN’s “The Game” that the family decided to make the announcement yesterday after meeting with doctors at the University of Kansas Medical Center Monday to plan for treatment of the cancer found during a standard exam earlier this year. Riley County commissioners unanimously approved to add an ambulance to the northern part of the county. The commission gave EMS administration the go ahead to start the process for building a new ambulance station. This includes finding an architect, position requests, and determine where to put the station. “To me, it’s obvious that we need to put a station up there, we have ARPA money. It will basically just need a small house and an oversized garage. We have a chance to do that now,” says Commission Chair Greg McKinley.
