Ascension Via Christi will soon begin requiring all employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The hospital put out a release on Tuesday, stating leadership made the decision due to the emergence of new variants. This includes the hospital in Manhattan and the Wamego Health Center. The timeline for completing the vaccine series and meeting this requirement will be November 12th. Manko Window Systems will be given the Manahttan Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Cornerstone Award” when the chamber hosts it’s business awards luncheon next week. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jason Smith tells KMAN the award is the organization’s de facto “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The former Manhattan Parks and Recreation employee charged with sexual exploitation of a child counts in Pottawatomie County made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning. Zach Bayless made an appearance via Zoom for a status hearing tied to his late May arrest. His next court appearance will be a status update hearing on August 31st. Bayless is accused of feloniously promoting a performance that included sexually explicit conduct of a child under the age of 14 and being in possession of sexually explicit content involving a child. WICHITA, Kan. — A former Kansas school teacher has been jailed and charged with child sex crimes. The Wichita Eagle reports 48-year-old Shawn Wingfield was arrested Saturday on two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. A Wichita Northwest High School spokeswoman says Wingfield began working there in 1997. He resigned July 19. Wingfield posted on Facebook last week that he was resigning for his personal health and wellbeing. He’s in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
SHAWNEE, Kan. — A suburban Kansas City summer camp has been shut down after eight COVID-19 cases were reported and hospitals were raising alarms about a rise in infected patients. The Kansas City Star reports that the camp, which was put on by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District, was held at Clear Creek Elementary School in Shawnee. The county health department said masks were only recommended, not required, and many children didn’t wear them.
WICHITA, Kan. — A Wichita businessman faces 17 federal counts after prosecutors accused him of failing to turn over more than $200,000 in employee payroll tax withholdings collected over nearly five years to the IRS. The Wichita Eagle reports that Jesus Perez-Aguayo was indicted earlier this month by a grand jury on 17 counts of failure to pay over payroll taxes. Each count carries a penalty of up to five years in federal prison. WINONA, Kan. — Authorities in western Kansas say an Arizona couple has died after their Jeep collided with a cow that had wandered onto U.S. Highway 40. Television station KAKE reports the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday about 7 miles west of Winona. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 45-year-old Raymond Kennedy, of Glendale, Arizona, and 54-year-old Brenda Carrasco, of Peoria, Arizona, were traveling eastbound in a Jeep Wrangler when it hit the cow and rolled several times. Both Kennedy and Carrasco were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers filed a report for burglary and criminal damage to property in the 1100 block of Hayes Dr. in Manhattan on July 26, 2021, around 7:37 a.m. Officers listed a 59-year-old female and Bob’s Plumbing and Heating as the victims when it was reported an unknown suspect cut off and stole two catalytic converters from a 2012 Ford E250 van and stole miscellaneous tools from inside the van as well.
