KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the death of a woman struck by a stray bullet at a Kansas City arts event. The Kansas City Star reports a judge on Tuesday sentenced Deon’te Copkney to 18 years for second-degree murder for his role in Erin Langhofer’s 2019 death. The Overland Park, Kansas woman was shot in the head during a First Friday event. Thousands of people were mingling in the city’s Crossroads District when gunfire erupted. Police say she wasn’t connected to the fight that prompted the shooting.

WICHITA, Kan. — Police say a 19-year-old man is dead following a shooting at an apartment complex in central Wichita’s Riverside neighborhood. Police say the shooting happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment complex parking lot, where officers found the man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they’re investigating to try to learn what led up to the shooting. Police say they have made no arrests and don’t yet have any suspects.

With the Riley County Fair in full swing starting this week, county extension is asking fair goers to be conscious of parking. Extension Agent Megan Dougherty says they will be rerouting traffic due to the ongoing construction on Kimball Avenue. The north parking lot off of Kimball will be open only to rodeo contestants, 4-H livestock trailers and VIP pass holders. That lot is only accessible at Avery Avenue off of Kimball. . Construction delays mean scheduled tours for the new Junction City High School are on hold. Geary County Schools USD 475 officials say the cancelation of the tours doesn’t affect the scheduled first day of classes in the new facility, slated for August 25th. The school district was hoping to show off the new school August 6th and 7th, but will, instead, host a ribbon cutting later in the fall.

An arrest warrant affidavit released by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office details what led to the arrest of a former Manhattan Parks and Recreation employee, charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The document, obtained by News Radio KMAN Tuesday, alleges 31-year-old Zach Bayless, a former Recreation Supervisor, downloaded and shared a lewd video of a young girl in “stages of undress” on a messaging app called Kik. The rehabilitation project for the stilling basin below Tuttle Creek Dam is nearing completion, with it being given back to control of the Army Corps of Engineers Operations team at the lake. Operations Project Manager Brian McNulty tells KMAN the project included closure of an old drain that helped cause a sinkhole. Public access remains closed and there won’t be a full-reopening for a while. The east side of Outlet Park will remain shut down. Eight employees from the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) recently joined more than 1,400 other U.S. Department of Agriculture employees across the country to assist in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s COVID-19 vaccination effort. According to a release from USDA Friday, some employees helped with operational tasks associated with clinics, others assisted with vaccination experience like NBAF’s highly-trained veterinarians administering shots.
