Manhattan residents not only enjoyed beautiful weather this weekend, but also some great tasting chili as well. The third annual Manhattan Chili Cook=off was presented by The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation’s Young Trustees, and featured a line up of great tasting chili. Each chili was made by a team, which consisted of a local non-profit paired with a local corporate sponsor. As people entered the cook-off they voted on which chili was their favorite. In Manhattan, the Veterans Day Parade staple is the Veterans Day Parade that runs along Poyntz Ave.. This year, people will also have a chance to observe some of the tools today’s soldiers use in combat. Minimum-custody inmate Kyle Ingels #98449 was placed on escape status at approximately 6:48 p.m., Tuesday, after he walked away from the Wichita Work Release Facility. Offender Ingels has yet to be located. Ingels, a 32-year-old white male, left for work at 10:30 a.m. and was reported missing when he did not report back to the facility following work Tuesday evening. A suspect who had escaped custody from the Riley County Police Department has been apprehended. 33 year old Cory Calkins, of Manhattan, was taken into custody around 4:30 pm on Thursday. Calkins escaped from RCPD custody on November 2 after being apprehended. He was arrested on probable cause offenses of aggravated burglary, possession of meth, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Calkins is being booked on those offenses along with aggravated escape from custody, interference with LEO, and theft. The offenses are from 3 separate cases. WESTMORELAND, Kan. — Just weeks after Pottawatomie County Commissioner Travis Altenhofen announced his resignation, the Pottawatomie County Republican Party has chosen Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat as his successor. Manhattan Area Technical College has been named one of the top 150 two-year public colleges in the country by The Aspen Institute. The honor is part of The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program that chose the top 15 percent out of about 1,000 two-year public colleges that applied. Selection of institutions is based on completion rates, employment rates, learning, earnings and equity. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Time is running out to begin construction on a new coal-fired power plant in Kansas before its permit lapses. The battle over the plant has lasted more than a decade.
