KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas’ top health official says the state could finish vaccinating seniors and essential workers and move on to the next phase of coronavirus vaccinations in the next month. Dr. Lee Norman said Tuesday that the state could reach the third phase in four weeks or sooner. The next phase includes people aged 16 to 64 with medical conditions that put them at severe risk if they are infected with COVID-19, including cancer and Type 2 diabetes, as well as workers in critical industries such as information technology and government. DERBY, Kan. — Sheriff’s investigators in suburban Wichita say a man has died in a two-vehicle crash in the city of Derby. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened late Tuesday morning, when a southbound minivan ran a red light and crashed into a Jeep that was turning left. Deputies say a 61-year-old man driving the van died at the scene of the crash. His name was not immediately released. Authorities say the 29-year-old woman driving the Jeep was not seriously injured.
MINNEOLA, Kan. — State police in Kansas say a person has died after being shot by police in the southwestern town of Minneola. Television station KWCH reports that the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday. The Kansas Bureau of Investigations confirmed it was called to investigate the shooting. Authorities had not released the name of the person killed or any details of how the shooting occurred by midmorning Wednesday, but said no officers were injured in the deadly confrontation. Riley County has confirmed 12 new positive COVID-19 cases and one additional recovery since Monday, bringing the total number of active cases to 60. Ascension Via Christi is caring for three positive patients, one of whom is in the intensive care unit. The percent positive rate for the week of February 28th was 2.2 percent, or 42 positive positive results out of 1,874 total tests. This marks the sixth consecutive week that the percent rate has been below five percent for Riley County.
