By Emma Loura Family members testified Thursday that two women who say they were raped showed emotional changes after their attacks. The trial for Gavin Haberman, a Manhattan man charged for the rape and aggravated sexual battery of two women in 2024, entered its third day Thursday in Riley County District Court. A local business reported a burglary early Tuesday morning in central Manhattan, prompting an investigation by the Riley County Police Department. Officers filed the report at approximately 6:18 a.m. on Oct. 29 in the 1100 block of Third Street. Antojitos El Sol was listed as the victim after it was reported that an unknown suspect broke into the business and stole a cash register. The estimated total loss from the incident is $1,280. Mandy Torres, 45, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 10:12 p.m. on Oct. 29, 2025 in the 700 block of Griffith Drive in Manhattan on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. This arrest stems from original charges of burglary, theft and criminal trespass. Torres was issued no bond and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. By Emma Loura A 22-year-old woman who took the stand in Riley County District Court Wednesday said she couldn’t believe a man she’d known since middle school had sexually assaulted her and her friend. Gavin Haberman, 21, of Manhattan is charged with the rape and aggravated sexual battery of two women who were guests at his home in September 2024. The trial began Monday with jury selection. One of the oldest chimpanzees in the world died Wednesday at Sunset Zoo. Susie, 71, a Western chimpanzee had been a resident of Manhattan’s zoo since 1974. “Sunset Zoo is deeply saddened to share the passing of Susie the Western chimpanzee,” officials wrote in a statement. Officials said Susie had been under close veterinary and caretaker observation to monitor for expected age-related health challenges such as development of cataracts, arthritis, and muscle loss for many years. They said they had recently noticed a decline.
