On May 23, 2025, at approximately 12:44 a.m., an officer filed a report of interference with a law enforcement officer in the 2000 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. The officer reported that he attempted to arrest a 35-year-old female on an outstanding warrant for her arrest. The 35-year-old female suspect fled from the officer for a short distance before being placed under arrest without further incident. Susie, the oldest living chimpanzee in human care in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), is turning 71. A celebration honoring Susie will take place at 11:45 a.m. on June 12 at the chimp exhibit. The theme of the celebration will be “The Queen Wears Black.” The zoo will provide enrichment and birthday activities for guests. Born in 1954, Susie arrived at Sunset Zoo in 1974. Rock Creek softball is headed back to the Class 4A state tournament for the fifth straight season after rallying past El Dorado 7-6 and holding off Tonganoxie 10-6 to win Wednesday’s regional championship on its home field. Wamego softball is set to defend its state title, as the Red Raiders won the regional championship Tuesday night at home. Rock Creek baseball took advantage of its home turf at The Rock on Tuesday night, sailing through regionals without allowing a single run on a quest to return to the state championship. The Mustangs moved to 21-6 in their state title defense, easily knocking out the Eudora Cardinals in the first game, 10-0, before taking down the Louisburg Wildcats, 3-0. By Beth Day WAMEGO, May 21 — Caterpillar Inc., notified its workforce at the Wamego facility today that Solar Turbines, a Caterpillar subsidiary, will take ownership of the facility, according to a company spokesperson. Solar Turbines will continue manufacturing operations in Wamego and use the existing workforce. Caterpillar had announced in June, 2024, it was closing the Wamego plant sometime mid-summer of 2025. The facility had been listed for sale for $11.5 million.
