HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Authorities in south-central Kansas say one person has died in a fiery crash near Hutchinson. Television station KAKE reports that the crash happened around 7 p.m. Sunday northwest of Hutchinson along or near Kansas Highway 96. Reno County Sheriff’s Captain Steve Lutz says a pickup truck caught fire after crashing, trapping a person inside the vehicle. Lutz says that person died at the scene. Officials have not released the victim’s name or given other details of the crash, but say investigators believe excessive speed contributed to the fatality.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas is reporting that nearly 1,100 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases and another seven COVID-19-related deaths over the previous three days. The state Department of Health and Environment said Monday that Kansas has had 31,730 coronavirus virus cases since the pandemic reached the state in early March. That’s up 3.6% or 1,092 cases since Friday. The state health department said there have been 387 COVID-19-related deaths reported for Kansas during the pandemic, an increase of 1.8% since Friday. Riley County today is reporting 6 new positive COVID-19 tests and 1 recovery since Friday. That brings the active case count to 126, a net increase of 5 cases . Additionally, adding in 11 probable cases that have recovered makes 352 recoveries and 5 deaths of 483 confirmed cases reported since the pandemic was declared in March. The numbers differed from those reported Monday morning. Overall, more than 5,500 tests have been administered. Motorists traveling through Northern Riley County are advised to be aware of upcoming highway projects starting Friday. KDOT is planning two connected projects amounting $2.3 million on U.S. 24 and U.S. 77 beginning August 14. Road crews from Manhattan’s Shilling Construction Co. will start resurfacing 77 at mile marker 194 and 24 at mile marker 194 near Randolph. The work will extend south on 24 to mile marker 311. Travelers will be directed through the construction zone by flaggers and a pilot car. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes. Construction is expected to wrap up late September. KDOT encourages…

A Wichita woman died in a Friday vehicle collision at the entrance ramp off of Scenic Drive onto K-18. The incident occurred just before noon when a Buick LaCrosse, driven by 83-year-old Sylvia Harden, turned left off of the Scenic ramp to enter K-18. She entered the lane of a Ford F650, driven by 55-year-old Brad Dunlap of Abilene, traveling on eastbound K18 in the right lane. The F650 struck the Buick on the driver’s side. Riley County Friday reported 12 new positive COVID-19 tests and 5 recoveries since Wednesday. That brings the active case count to 121. Additionally, adding in 10 probable cases that have recovered makes 351 recoveries and 5 deaths of 447 confirmed cases reported since the pandemic was declared in March. 186 test are pending and 4,822 have tested negative.
