Manhattan Area Technical College is celebrating National Career Technical Education Day tomorrow. According to MATC president Jim Genandt, CTE Day is when students commit to the technical college they plan to attend. “Washburn Tech and Wichita Tech go gangbusters on this,” Genandt said. “We’re playing catch up, but we’ve got, I think, 60 to 70 incoming students coming tomorrow to participate in that, again with social distancing and masks.” He says the event gives MATC an opportunity to combat stigmas associated with technical colleges. “It’s not that you’re too dumb to go to college,” Genandt said. “You’re going to a…

The City of Manhattan plans to install several “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” signs in flood-prone areas throughout the Wildcat Creek watershed. The venture is part of the Resilient Wildcat Creek Floodplain Management plan. MISSION, Kan. — Kansas’ top health official says the state is suspending distribution of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccines as federal health officials investigate reports of potentially dangerous blood clots. Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, predicted the pause won’t have a “big impact” on the state’s overall rate of shots. That’s because less than 4% of the shots administered in Kansas have been from Johnson & Johnson, according to KDHE data. WICHITA, Kan. — A former Kansas mayor who resigned abruptly before being charged with making fake tickets to attend a zoo fundraiser has entered into a diversion agreement with prosecutors. Former Goddard Mayor Jamey Lee Blubaugh signed his diversion packet in court on Monday. Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said in a written statement that under the agreement Blubaugh must follow the law, perform 50 hours of community service and pay $980 in restitution plus other costs. GARDNER, Kan. — Authorities in suburban Kansas City, Kansas, say a four-vehicle crash has left a child dead and three others injured. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Monday morning at a rural intersection west of Gardner. Investigators say a roofing truck crashed into a sport utility vehicle driven by a woman and carrying her three children. The impact of the crash sent the SUV into another truck, which then hit a van. Authorities say one child in the SUV was killed. Riley County commissioners have given consensus for the EMS and Emergency Management to move forward with a land study for possible new facilities. EMS Director David Adams discussed Monday the long standing facility needs for both entities. Adams says the current headquarter facility for the EMS is over 40 years old and does not meet current standards. “When the facility was built, our call volume was around 1,500 calls a year.  We’re now at 4,600 to 4,800 calls a year,” says Adams.
