Motorists at Fort Riley will need to adjust their routes. The base plans to close the Trooper gate temporarily as it begins on a construction project at the Trooper Access Control Point. It closes Friday at 7 p.m. and will remain so until the project wraps by the end of September. In its place, Fort Riley will reopen Henry Drive. Manhattan Tuesday unanimously passed a 1st reading of its 2021 budget featuring a flat mill levy. The full budget amounts more than $166 million, up about $3 million due to about half a million dollars in property valuation increases — to be in-part directed to the city’s bond and interest fund and to fully fund the approved RCPD budget — and sales taxes collections earmarked for Manhattan’s new two voter-approved middle school recreation centers. The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter will host its third annual Clear the Shelters adoption event this Saturday. A number of animals will be available for adoption during this event for a discounted fee of $25. “We have 66 cats and 19 dogs that need homes,” Deb Watkins, T. Pottawatomie County voters have chosen their next sheriff. That will be incumbent Shane Jager, who defeated Michael Baker by gaining an unofficial 81 percent of the votes in Tuesday’s primary. Riley County primary-election results Two races were contested on the Riley County Commission Tuesday, both on the Republican side. Moving on in District 3 on the Republican side is John Matta who defeated incumbent Ron Wells receiving 57 percent of the vote. The final tally was Matta with 1,345 to Wells’ 996 votes. Riley County commissioners will not put a half cent sales tax continuation on this year’s ballot, but will before 2023. County Clerk Rich Vargo says a Manhattan City commission agenda states the new citywide half cent sales will replace the county’s, which is not correct.
