It’s fair time in Riley County, and Riley County Extension Director Gary Fike says there’s nothing like a county fair. “The county fair is one of those traditions in the Midwest that really doesn’t have an equal,” Fike said Friday on KMAN’s In Focus. The only White House press secretary to serve in two separate administrations will be honored this Fall by the K-State Alumni Association. Marlin Fitzwater, a 1965 journalism graduate, is the 2019 recipient of the Alumni Excellence Award according to a release by the association. He served as press secretary for both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush during his 10 years working in the White House. WICHITA — Kansas health and environment officials are recommending alternative ways for municipal water operators to treat toxic blue-green algal blooms that have troubled state lakes for nearly 10 years. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people and animals that come into contact with cyanobacteria algae might suffer diarrhea, headaches and other symptoms. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has detected traces of toxins related to the blooms in at least five water treatment plants. TOPEKA — Kansas health department employees who will handle complicated applications for Medicaid health coverage will work out of state Department for Children and Families offices. The agencies announced a partnership Monday to have Kansas Department of Health and Environment workers located in 17 DCF offices across the state. Officials said the arrangements will make both agencies more efficient and expand their reach. KDHE employees are moving into DCF offices in Wichita and Hays this week and into another 15 DCF offices by January. OLATHE — Jurors have awarded more than $2 million to a Missouri man who was injured when a driver threw a tractor-trailer in reverse on Interstate 35 in Kansas. The Kansas City Star reports that Michael Whitt, of the Kansas City suburb of Riverside, Missouri, was headed to his office in nearby Lenexa, Kansas, during a July 2015 thunderstorm when he saw the rig’s taillights. Whitt was hit despite stopping. He said his injuries forced him to close his clinical social work business. Fort Riley will be evaluating and synchronizing the installation’s emergency preparedness processes and procedures in a full-scale exercise Wednesday, July 24th. Officials advise community members to expect increased activity by emergency response vehicles on post as well as announcements via the “giant voice” loudspeaker. Due to the exercise, traffic may be re-routed due to some roads being temporarily closed. Authorities ask motorists to allow for extra time traveling around the post.

This year’s Riley County Fair will be short a couple of longstanding events. The parade and Blue Valley Pork Producer’s barbecue that normally took place on the first night of the fair will not happen this year, according to Riley County Extension Director Gary Fike, who stopped by KMAN’s In Focus.
