TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A freshman Kansas House member who’s due to get a public warning from colleagues about his behavior before he took office has rejoined the Democratic Party. Rep. Aaron Coleman of Kansas City, Kansas, confirmed Monday that he returned to the party last week, about three weeks after registering unaffiliated. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A 13-year-old girl in Kansas died after being dragged for several miles by her family’s SUV that had been stolen outside of a restaurant, police said. The girl was sitting in the back seat of the running vehicle while her family went inside to get food on Saturday when Kevin Palmer, 34, got into the driver’s seat and took off, Wichita police said in a news release. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Three men avoided prison for hunting deer in areas of Fort Riley where explosives are discharged during training exercises, but they will each pay several thousand dollars in penalties. The men will also be banned from hunting for three years while they are on probation. The federal case involving several illegal hunts in 2018 and 2019 ended last week after the third man pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges as part of a deal with prosecutors. A Manhattan structure fire resulted in about $30,000 in damages Sunday evening. The Manhattan Fire Department responded to 2030 College Heights at 6:50 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of a structure fire. Crews arrived to the one-story residential structure, reportedly owned by Mark and Jayne Lund of Green, KS, to find smoke coming from the attic. The 17 fire fighters and six fire apparatuses that reported to the incident were able to contain the fire within about 20 minutes. Riley County health officials confirmed 15 new coronavirus cases and one additional recovery on Friday. Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan is currently caring for seven positive patients, including one patient in the Intensive Care Unit. The total number of coronavirus cases in Riley County since the start of the pandemic is now 6,040 with the total number of active cases at 252. Riley County has also seen 5,757 recoveries during that time. Riley County’s emergency radio system upgrade is nearly paid off. Emergency Management Director Russell Stukey told county commissioners Thursday that 90 percent of the final payment has been issued to the contracted company. “We held back a little over $80,000 and about 10% in retention until they’ve completed their 173rd contract or obligations,” Stukey added, “We continue to meet with them typically once a week, if not 2 or 3 times a week.
