PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Suburban Kansas City police responding to a welfare check found a 19-year-old man dead with a gunshot wound. Prairie Village police said in a news release that they found the teen at 6:18 a.m. on Tuesday lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by local police as well as the Johnson County crime lab and medical examiner.

MISSION, Kan. — Kansas reported a 4% increase in new cases of the coronavirus Tuesday, with large numbers being reported in communities with meatpacking plants. Confirmed coronavirus cases in Kansas rose by 213, up to 5,458 total, though the actual number is thought to be higher because of limited testing and because people can be infected without showing symptoms. Reported COVID-19-related deaths increased by one to 137. Four counties with meat packing plants Seward, Ford, Finney and Lyon have a combined 2,258 confirmed cases, 41% of the state’s total.

Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 has named Daniel Simon as the newest principal of Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. Simon is currently a teacher at Sunset Elementary School in Salina. Prior to that, Simon served as a teacher at Northview Elementary School in Manhattan from 2014 to 2019. He graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and from Kansas State University in 2018 with a Master of Science in educational leadership. Riley County residents who want to see county commission meetings streamed may have to wait until after the current pandemic has ended. During Monday’s commission meeting, public comment was brought up by Riley County Resident Noah Rude who was asking when the meetings will be streamed. Commissioner Ron Wells says they will be presented more details after the pandemic on costs and how to implement a streaming system. Facing revenue shortfalls since moving to remote instruction and many students left town, Kansas State University is furloughing an estimated 349 employees according to a Saturday release. The university estimates it will take a $35 million hit due to COVID-19 prompted actions, which includes about $8 million in Housing and Dining fee refunds. With revenues significantly decreased, KSU officials have elected to furlough employees of auxiliary operations effective May 16 with the goal of bringing the hundreds of workers back on payroll August 1.
