Three Lady Raiders will represent Wamego High School at the state tournament next week as a result of their performance at Monday’s regional in McPherson. The team placed fourth, just four strokes out of tying with Buhler for third and earning a team slot. However, the top five golfer unaffiliated with a state qualifying team will also compete and in Wamego’s case this will be Addison Douglass, who placed second, Sophia Hellman, who tied for 11th, and Lillian Costa who placed 16th. The race at the top of the Big 12 Power Rankings continues to tighten. Only two points separate Iowa State and BYU for the top spot. The Cyclones are No. 1 for the third straight week after receiving nine of a possible 16 first-place votes (249 points) from a panel of media who regularly cover the Big 12. Angel Roeser, candidate for Kansas House of Representatives, said Tuesday evening she didn’t intend to withhold information about her degree, even though she now acknowledges that she has not yet graduated from K-State. That followed a report in The Mercury earlier that day that Roeser, a Republican running for the District 67 seat, did not have a degree, even though she claimed to be a K-State graduate. A Manhattan man is being held on no bond following his arrest on Tuesday night in Riley County. Donovan Dumas, 31, was arrested on a probable cause charge of rape of a mentally deficient individual. At this time, Dumas is confined on the charge. RCPD Captain Brad Jager says that police are still waiting to hear from the judge in the case on what the bond will be.
Manhattan High girls’ golf completed the latest step in its climb towards a state championship at regionals on Monday. The Indians took care of business in the Washburn Rural regional, placing first with a team score of 315 to clinch its spot in the state tournament. Manhattan bested its host in the Junior Blues who tallied a score of 329. It was a two-way race for first as in third place was Lawrence Free State, seemingly miles behind with 418 points. Angel Roeser, a candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives, has claimed that she had a degree from K-State, but university records show she does not — at least not yet. Roeser, a Republican, is facing Democrat Kim Zito in the race for the 67th District seat. Records show that Roeser, 23, is currently a senior in human development and family science at K-State. TOPEKA — Some of Kansas’ largest cities are struggling to gain full returns on tax increment financing districts meant to help bolster development activity and property values, a recent state audit found. TIF districts, as they are called, are intended to fund real estate projects that otherwise wouldn’t exist. The idea is that the development will increase property values in the designated district, resulting in higher property tax collections that are used to pay off the bonds that financed the project. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating multiple vehicle burglaries in the Whispering Meadows subdivision, located in rural Manhattan in Pottawatomie County. The investigation revealed that around 3 a.m. Saturday, unknown subjects entered into multiple vehicles and removed several items.
