KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy. Police spokesman Dustin Dierenfeldt says officers were called to the Rosedale area of the city Saturday evening after gunshots were heard. The officers found the teenager suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police are investigating the death as a homicide but no other details have been released.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The city of Lawrence has reached a settlement with a Black driver who was shot by a police officer in 2018. The driver, Akira Lewis, filed an excessive force lawsuit after he was shot during a traffic stop. In court documents filed Friday, the city agreed to pay Lewis $80,000. Under the settlement, neither the city nor Lewis accepted liability in the shooting. Lewis was shot by a rookie officer who said she meant to use her Taser but drew her gun instead. WICHITA, Kan. — The Wichita Police Department spent more than $1.5 million in overtime for officers and other employees to monitor protests in the city in early June. The department implemented a plan to ensure public safety during social justice demonstrations that began after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May. The demonstrations stayed calm in Wichita except for two nights in early June, when police cleared protesters after vandalism and looting. A small group of Sunset Zoo employees, Manhattan city officials, KBS Constructors, Inc. officials and zoo supporters came together Friday to break ground on the Sunset Zoo’s newest exhibit, Expedition Asia. The nearly $4.3 million project will feature a renovation and expansion of Malayan tiger, Amur leopard and sloth bear exhibits, some of which are over 50-years old. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Federal authorities are investigating possible civil rights violations in the January 2018 shooting death of a Kansas teenager by an Overland Park police officer. An FBI spokeswoman said Thursday the agency, its Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney in Kansas are investigating the death of 17-year-old John Albers. Albers was shot to death by officer Clayton Jenison as he backed out of the driveway of his Overland Park home. Officers went to the home when friends reported Albers was threatening to hurt himself. WICHITA, Kan. — A Kansas man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man during a drug deal, and authorities say the Tinder dating app played a key role in tracking him down. The Wichita Eagle reports that 27-year-old Tanner Mora of Wichita was sentenced Wednesday for the killing in a health club parking lot. Lorenzo Wade’s body was found by a plastic bag of marijuana on Feb. 6, 2019. Prosecutors say Wade was killed during a drug deal that went wrong and turned into a robbery. LONGTON, Kan. –Authorities are investigating a homicide in southeast Kansas. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that a relative of 34-year-old Amy Lammon called 911 Thursday morning to report that she was dead. Deputies with the Elk County Sherriff’s Office responded and found her body inside a home. No details were released about how she died or whether a suspect had been identified.
