From K-State Athletics Senior forward Dean Wade was named a Preseason Top 50 candidate for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy’s in an announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club today (November 6). The Wooden list, which reflects the early frontrunners for one of the premier Player of the Year awards, was chosen in a poll of national college basketball experts. Kansas State used a 13-0 run to end the first quarter and capture a lead they would never relinquish on Monday night, as the Wildcats capped its exhibition schedule with a 65-50 win over Pittsburg State at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats were led by freshman guard Christianna Carr with a game-high 27 points. Carr was 10-of-20 from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. From K-State Athletics Seniors Barry Brown, Jr., and Dean Wade were among 50 players selected to the watch list for the Citizen Naismith Trophy Player of the Year, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club today (November 5). The preseason watch list will be trimmed to 30 on February 13, 2019 with the release of the midseason 30 team followed by 10 national semifinalists on March 4, 2019 and four finalists on March 19, 2019. From K-State Athletics The Big 12 Conference named K-State redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne as its Rookie of the Week after leading the Wildcats in kills, hitting percentage and digs in a straight-set win over West Virginia Saturday, the league office announced Monday. Heyne, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, collects her second weekly honor of the season after picking up 11 kills while hitting .450 to go with a career-best 10 digs for the first double-double of her career against the Mountaineers. Announced on the team’s Twitter account, Manhattan High boys soccer coach Frank Alonso passed away on Sunday morning. He had been battling stage IV pancreatic cancer. Alonso was 52. Deemed inoperable by doctors, Coach Alonso was diagnosed with this disease on October 15. Once the community heard about the news, a GoFundMe page created to support Alonso’s fight and it raised $45,344 as of Monday morning. Campbell Trophy, Kansas State senior right tackle Dalton Risner added another line to his off-the-field resume on Thursday by being named a semifinalist for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy, the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach (FL) announced. Risner is one of 12 players to be named a semifinalist for the “nation’s premier award for community service” and the lone player from the Big 12 on the list.
