Chris Sale had just shut down one of the hottest teams in baseball, helping the banged-up Boston Red Sox take over sole possession of first place in the AL East for the first time all season. And he looked as if he wanted to punch a wall. Sale was two outs shy of his second consecutive complete game when Boston manager John Farrell trundled to the mound Tuesday night. But the left-hander’s pitch count had already reached 110 on the way to an 8-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals, so Farrell’s decision to summon a reliever was relatively easy.…

(AP) The fortunes of Jason Hammel and the Kansas City Royals have taken similar turns this season. Both started with high expectations, endured a miserable first month that left many fans writing them off, then found a spark somewhere along the way. Hammel’s latest starring role came Monday night, when he held the powerful Boston Red Sox in check for seven sharp innings. And when Whit Merrifield drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh, and Mike Minor and Kelvin Herrera closed it out, the Royals had a 4-2 win — their eighth in nine games. Eric…

(AP) Jason Vargas never had to worry about clearing his schedule for the All-Star Game. That might be about to change. Vargas earned his 10th win, most in the majors, and Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 on Sunday. As the first pitcher to reach double digits in wins, Vargas finds himself ahead of perennial All-Stars such as Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale. Still, the Royals’ unassuming left-hander with the 2.27 ERA isn’t locking in travel arrangements to Miami next month just yet. “I’ve never been invited to the…

(AP) A trip to California was all the Kansas City Royals needed to get their offense in gear. Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon hit solo home runs and the Royals picked up their fifth consecutive victory, beating the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 on Thursday night. The Royals have now scored at least seven runs in each of their last five games, marking only the third such streak in franchise history. The feat was previously accomplished May 25-June 1, 1978 and Aug. 9-12 1979. The streaking Royals have been getting it done with power, clubbing 14 homers in this unbeaten stretch…
(AP) Kansas State forward Isaiah Maurice was dismissed from the basketball team Thursday for a violation of team rules, leaving the Wildcats even thinner in their front court. Maurice showed flashes late last season of becoming a significant contributor, averaging 5.9 points over the team’s last seven games. The redshirt freshman appeared in 30 games overall, including both of its NCAA Tournament games. Wildcats coach Bruce Weber did not specify the rules violation, but said in a statement that Maurice failed to meet the standards and responsibilities of the program. Kansas State lost D.J. Johnson to graduation, leaving Dean Wade…
