The Manhattan City Commission on Tuesday will hear budget requests from outside agencies. City officials turned Tuesday’s work session into a special meeting, which will be at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The city government annually provides financial assistance to various community agencies, Aggieville Business Association, Downtown Manhattan Inc., Manhattan Arts Center, Riley County Historical Society-Wolf House, Manhattan Area Technical College, Flint Hills Area Transportation on Agency Inc. and Prairie Paws Animal Shelter. Kansas State University officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday afternoon to celebrate the completion of the Edge District’s newest office building at 1960 Kimball Ave Senior vice president at the KSU Foundation Greg Lohrentz detailed the importance of the newest addition. “This building before us will provide hope for nearly 250 new employees,” he said. ” The Edge District also features Rockin K’s restaurant and a Brothers Coffee Co. location. Manhattan’s Ag Press building is set to undergo major renovations, and the new owner is seeking assistance from the city to relocate the public sewer line underneath the building. The sewer line project is part of owner Derek Richards’ larger $1 million dollar vision to reinvent the historic ag press building into “The Press,” a trendy new concert and event venue. The original sewer line was built in the 1940’s and Richards argues that the line will need to be replaced soon anyways and it would benefit both parties to get it done sooner rather than later. Armon Bosse Jr., of Onaga, has announced his running for the district 5 seat on the Pottawatomie County commission. Bosse says his previous 7 years on the planning and zoning board has given him the institutional knowledge required for the county commissioner position. Solar power is something Bosse would like to incorporate more in the Northern parts of the county. The Manhattan city commission unanimously approved the adoption of the Move MHK parks and rec master plan at Tuesday’s meeting. Commissioners adopted the plan which included four recommendations from the Parks and Rec advisory board that will be further explored. Hans Tessmann announced he is running for the newly created district 4 seat on the Pott. County commission. District #4 includes St. George and the surrounding township. Tessman said he has come around to the idea of the commission expansion after initially voting against it… He also added that his main priority is to help give his district the proper representation in the county. Tessmann said he will look to bring projects to the district, but only if businesses pay their own share… The primary takes place August 6th.
Manhattan hosted the 2nd annual Dock Dogs competition this weekend at Blue Earth Plaza, which featured dogs from all over the country. Kitty Pursley is the local organizer and explained her reasoning for wanting to start this event last year… Activities were slightly delayed by weather on Saturday, but Pursley says it didn’t effect participation for the event. She added event has now grown big enough for other competitors to travel significant distances to the little apple… The three main components of dock diving include big air, extreme vertical, and speed retrieve competitions.
The Little Apple celebrated its 35th annual Juneteenth holiday this long weekend, which was highlighted by a unity walk and performance by Grammy and Academy-award winning singer Regina Belle. Jurdene Coleman is the chair of the Manhattan Juneteenth planning committee, and she said this year’s walk had one of the highest turnouts she can remember… The walk started at Long’s park and participants marched down Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Yuma St, and finished at the Douglass Center.
