Downtown Manhattan was packed for Purple Power Play on Friday evening as members of the community celebrated the kickoff of the K-State sports season in the Little Apple. Organizers said they had their “highest attendance year yet” at the annual event, which took place the night before K-State football opened its 2024 slate with a 41-6 home win over Tennessee-Martin. A Manhattan man is being held in the Riley County Jail after being arrested Saturday morning for assaulting police officers. 31-year-old Camron Todd Leupold was arrested in the 2200 block of Buckingham around 2:30 a.m. on two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer, and one count each of battery and interference with a law enforcement officer. As of Saturday, Leupold was still confined in the RCJ on a total bond of $10,000. Reports show Leupold was arrested last November for violating a protection order, domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Law enforcement are investigating a recent case of burglary and identity theft. Just before 10 a.m. Thursday, RCPD officers filed a report of vehicular burglary in the 2800 block of Allison Avenue in Manhattan, where a 45-year-old woman reported her car was broken into and her Chase Bank card was taken by an unknown subject. The card was then used at Walmart in Topeka. Total loss associated with this report is approximately $3,000.

A Manhattan man is behind bars following an early-morning arrest that occurred on Friday. Douglas Michael Holen was arrested around 3:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Walters Drive for criminal trespassing and violating a protection order. The 58-year-old remained in the riley County jail as of Friday on a total bond of $12,000.

Manhattan city commissioners will finalize the 2025 budget and mill levy rate Tuesday evening. Starting tonight, RCPD will restrict traffic in certain areas of Aggieville from 11:00 PM to 2:30 AM, and will be limited to Friday and Saturday nights. The vice president of a local construction company is pushing back against a city official’s claim that material shortages caused a road project’s delayed completion date. Travis Shilling, vice president of Shilling Construction Company Inc., said Tuesday the complexity of the work on Anderson/Bluemont Avenue between 11th Street and Harris Drive was the reason it missed its original expected completion date of Aug. 16. Just after 4p.m. August 24, a 39-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman reported a renter of their property did a substantial amount of damage to the property. The subject is a 19-year-old man.
