The Wabaunsee County Sherriff’s Office captured approximately 11 pounds of cocaine early Sunday morning, according to their official Facebook page. Dickinson and Marshall Counties assisted with the bust that saw one suspect taken into custody without incident. The traffic stop on I-70, at mile marker 322, where police K-9 units detected the drugs in the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect is currently being held within the Wabaunsee County jail pending bond.

Residents filled the Larry Norvell Band Shell and Manhattan ice rink Saturday for a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride. A parade started off the event and also featured over a dozen vendors and concluded with a drag show. Manhattan resident Kim Zito is running the 67th district seat in the Kansas House and says she intends to stand up for LGBT individuals. Zito was defeated in the 2022 election by Rep. Mike Dodson. Thursday was Ron Fehr Day in Manhattan. The long-time city manager was recognized for his four-decade career with the city, including the last 24 as the city’s top administrator. Kansas State University hosted political activist Chloe Cole Wednesday evening where she spoke on her experience as a child who underwent hormone treatment and transgender surgery. Cole detransitioned after initially transitioning as a teenager, and is now advocating for the ban against gender-affirming care to children. Kansas Mesonet meteorologist Chip Redmond gave an update on how recent weather conditions contributed to the Burklund / Axelton fire, which burned over 8,000 acres in Riley and Pottawatomie counties. More street maintenance can be expected over the summer as city officials enter a more active construction season. Casement Road, Anderson Ave. between Sunset and 11th, Denison between Anderson and Claflin, and Hudson Avenue from Dickens to Claflin all will have active maintenance done over the summer. There’s also a major intersection improvement at Kimball and Denison which will include a full intersection closure over the summer. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Flint Hills Discovery Center to view the solar eclipse Monday afternoon. Peak viewing occurred at 1:51 p.m. where 85% obscurity was observed. Amateur astronomer Steve Johannes partnered with the Discovery Center to help citizens view the historic event. Curator of Education Sally Dreher says a grant from NASA helped the Discovery Center prepare. The Discovery Center hosted an event beforehand, and glasses were donated by the Manhattan Public Library and other local organizations. A Kansas State University professor gave a presentation at the Flint Hills Discovery Center Wednesday about the upcoming solar eclipse. On Monday, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible across the Midwest, including Manhattan. Manhattan City Commissioners unanimously approved an amendment Tuesday to the contract for license-plate recognition equipment in the Downtown parking garage. The IPS contract amendment cost $63,414 to be paid from the General Fund, increasing the total contract amount to $154,562.00 in one- time fees and $43,368 in annual recurring software fees. The commission has agreed to charge for parking in the garage, but no exact rate has been set.
