Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo reminds the community that polls are already open. Vargo says this is a great time to take advantage of the early voting allowed in Kansas. Vargo recommends reading the sample ballot on Riley County’s website, or stopping by to pick up a printed copy. He said the county cannot change the wording, which often confuses people. Voting ends on election day – Tuesday, November 8th.

Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Rogers was in Riley County Friday to present prizes to USD 383. He visited two elementary schools. Rogers presented $2,500 to Ogden Elementary School and $1,000 to Lee Elementary ESOL teacher Heidi Peoples. The randomly drawn prizes will purchase school supplies. There were more than 2,300 nominations in the Choose My School Supply Drive. The giveaway is a result of Learning Quest 529 accounts, which are designed to help Kansans save in tax-advantaged accounts for education expenses. The Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy at K-State has some upcoming events that will promote conversations and the acceptance of varied perspectives. Director and Associate Professor of Communications, Dr. Colene Lind talks about an event on Wednesday. They’ve also collaborated with the Beach Museum in Manhattan to bring a new exhibit Do you see what I see? to patrons. The museum is known for making art interactive, and this exhibition will foster important conversations. Wamego High School was full of excitement late Thursday evening. The community packed the gymnasium awaiting the return of 25 veterans and their student guardians after a whirlwind tour of the nation’s capital. At 9 p.m. flashing lights of police vehicles approached the high school, followed by a line of Veteran Bikers, and finally the tour bus of honorees. Wamego High School Senior Keauna Meyer escorted an Army Veteran. Larry Duch was an artillery soldier in Vietnam in 1970 and 71. Duch expressed gratitude for the handmade quilt that was wrapped around him as Meyer introduced him to hundreds of guests.…
The weather Saturday was perfect for learning a new skill, and USD 383 set up a closed course to allow the public to try driving a school bus. The event served as a way to draw in more potential drivers as the district tries to overcome workforce shortages. There was a variety of vehicles available to test out. More than 15 citizens tried out driving a bus, including Manhattan/Ogden Schools Superintendent Dr. Marvin Wade. He drove a big bus. K-State continues to be busy with events to celebrate the work they do in their Search for a Cure in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Johnson Cancer Research Center’s Director Doctor Sherry Fleming invites everyone to their Pink Power Luncheon. It’s catered by Coco Bolos at the Alumni Center at the corner of Anderson and Denison, and Blueville Nursery has donated door prizes. An Ogden home sustained significant fire and smoke damage Tuesday. Riley County Fire District #1 and Manhattan Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 203 William Drive around noon Tuesday. Crews found visible smoke and flames coming from a single family residence and a backyard chicken coop. City of Manhattan Fire Department crews arrived on scene first, aggressively attacked the fire, and brought it under control within 15 minutes. It was all hands on deck Saturday for the semi-annual Friends of the KAW clean up in the Manhattan-Saint George area. The weather was perfect for hard work on Saturday, and the Kansas River was the recipient of that from about sixty volunteers. More than five years ago, Friends of the KAW made a goal to clean up all the “really old dump sites.” Kansas River Keeper and Executive Director of Friends of the KAW Dawn Buehler from Eudora, Kansas traveled to Manhattan to help clean up sandbars between Manhattan and St. George. Doctor William Richter has been a member of the Manhattan Rotary Club for forty-one years. He is now recognized by the 2022 Distinguished Service Award from Rotary International. Rotary District 5710 Governor Vern Henricks reads the inscription on the crystal award. Richter offered a quick appreciation for the award, but was more pleased talking about the Rotary Club. Only fifty of those members are recognized by the international award annually. Richter spoke about the local clubs instead of about himself. Rotary Club members will join Friends of the KAW for the Fall Kansas River Clean Up Saturday morning.
