This year’s Baking competition at the Riley County Fair was cinnamon rolls, and the judges enjoyed their sweet assignment on Sunday. Riley County Commissioner John Ford joined Founder/Publisher Tyler Jackson of Manhattan City Lifestyle Magazine to judge the competition. The two enjoyed every entry, awarding a purple ribbon (excellent quality) to each. Manhattan’s Audrey Henderson shared why she enjoyed practicing for the competition. A Manhattan 9-year-old entered a rocket as his STEM Project at the Riley County Fair, Friday afternoon. Gantt Chase from the CiCo Shamrocks 4-H Club already has a background in rocketry. Participants submitted their projects, along with evidence that it is operational, directly to a judge. The judges critiqued the projects as they were submitted, giving compliments on design and advice on improvements. Chase also had the opportunity to interact with a professional engineer. The Riley County Fair wraps up Monday at CiCo Park.
Two former Wamego teachers appeared in Pottawatomie District Court Tuesday morning. 51-year-old Allen and 55-year-old Deborah Sylvester appeared in front of Judge Erich Campbell. Each are charged with unlawful sexual relations involving a student who was 17, later turned 18, during the 2020-21 school year. On May 31st, the married couple resigned their positions as teachers. Allen was a middle school Science teacher, and Deborah taught Math at the high school in USD 320. Honorable Campbell ordered a no-contact order between both defendants and the alleged victim. A man convicted of attempting to kill RCPD officers in 2018 has found himself back in jail, this time in Sherman County. 42-year-old Mark Harrison, formerly of Manhattan, is charged with three counts of conspiring to distribute marijuana inside the Winfield Correctional Facility. In lieu of his guilty plea to those charges, the court dismissed charges of conspiring to distribute contraband, forgery and two counts of fraud – by mail and by phone. Harrison was sentenced to 50 months in prison in July 2019 after pleading no contest in Riley County District Court to attempted voluntary manslaughter and was found…
