Fire officials say a Thursday afternoon fire at a Junction City apartment building was kept from becoming much worse thanks to quick work from firefighters.
Junction City Fire Chief Terry Johnson says fire crews were dispatched around 2 p.m. to the Bluff Apartments at 1810 Caroline Street where heavy fire and smoke was visible on the building’s second and third floors.
Johnson says the fire was contained to the one building and extinguished. The fire originated in the right corner of the third floor balcony of the structure. The building was evacuated while crews put out the fire. No injuries were reported.
A damage estimate is pending but Johnson says the fire sprinkler system was compromised and water damage prevented residents from returning to their homes. Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Junction City Fire was assisted at the scene by Fort Riley Fire and Geary County Emergency Management.
