K-State to receive over $3 million in additional state funding

By KMAN Staff on April 17, 2020 K-State Activity, Local News

K-State will get a $3.3 million boost to its budget from the Kansas Board of Regents.

Of the $3.3 million K-State will receive, about $2 million will go directly to the university while the rest will go K-State’s Polytechnic Campus, extension and agriculture-research programs and Veterinary Medical Center.

This funding comes in the form of a block grant and is in addition to the $111.1 million in general funding allocated to K-State from the state government for fiscal year 2021.

Public universities in Kansas use block grants when requesting additional funding and receive a percentage of the total amount allocated by the state based on how much they receive in general funding

The Kansas Board of Regents originally requested a $50 million block grant to be allocated to public universities in Kansas, but the legislature eventually settled on about $11.9 million in block-grant funding.

Schools typically receive block-grant funding in the summer, but uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic has caused the distribution of funds to be moved up so they have more time for financial planning.

K-State will also receive about $12.7 million in federal funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
