Manhattan and Riley County residents will have an opportunity to shred their unwanted documents on Wednesday.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is holding a shredding event in Manhattan as part of National Consumer Protection Week. This event is not only to give the public an opportunity, but to also educate the importance of protecting personal information.
Schmidt says identity theft is the fastest growing category of criminal conduct in the nation. Other Kansas communities will also have the opportunity this week as well. Schmidt has already been to Hutchison and Salina, which saw an increase in attendance.
Residents will be able to bring up to three boxes or bags of documents. This can include bank statements, bills, or any document with sensitive personal information. Drop off will be in a drive thru setup, where they will have to sign a permission slip allowing the company to shred the documents. There will be workers and signs designating residents on where to go. Only paper documents will be accepted.
The shredding event will take place at Cico Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
