The Riley County Police Department is continuing to investigate the Dec. 12 shooting inside Tate’s Bar in Aggieville.
Director Dennis Butler gave a brief update Wednesday during In Focus, about the shooting victim that was seriously injured in the incident.
RCPD doesn’t release names of crime victims, but an online criminal complaint filed in Riley County District Court, confirms the shooting victim was Reed Godinet, a Kansas State University football player.
A second person was also injured in the incident after being struck by the barrel of the gun.
The suspect in the case, 20-year-old Joshua Cummings, is charged with single counts of attempted murder in the first and second degree as well as aggravated battery. He was in court Tuesday for a status hearing, which has been continued to Jan. 11 in front of Judge William Malcolm.
As for how Aggieville businesses can prevent another shooting like this from happening, Butler says he’s hesitant to tell businesses how they should operate, but offered some considerations that might work for business owners with heightened concerns.
As for a timeline on the investigation, Butler says it could be several months before all the details are known. Butler also weighed in on the fact that now more than ever, police are seeing more guns out and about.
Butler says part of the reason for the increased guns on the streets could be attributed to relaxed gun laws passed by the Kansas Legislature.
