MANHATTAN — The Manhattan Fire Department has determined Wednesday night’s fire at the Brookfield Residences apartment building was accidental.
Investigators determined the fire started on the second-floor porch balcony due to improperly discarded smoking materials. Damage to the building is estimated at $120,000 along with $20,000 damage to the building’s contents. The two-story, 12-unit building sustained significant fire damage in two units, and smoke and water damage in two other units.
Crews were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. to the complex located at 415 Walters Drive. When crews arrived they found fire showing from the rear of the building, extending into the attic. Initial reports that occupants may be trapped inside were unfounded after fire crews searched the building and confirmed everyone exited safely. No injuries were reported.

Residents of a Manhattan apartment complex escaped a fire late Wednesday night with no injuries.
The Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to the Brookfield Residences at 415 Walters Drive shortly after 9 p.m. Crews found a two-story apartment building with fire showing from the rear and extending into the attic. After receiving initial reports some occupants may be trapped, crews searched the building and confirmed everyone exited safely. The fire was contained within 20 minutes with no reported injuries.
Two units sustained fire damage while two others sustained smoke and water damage. A damage estimate is pending. The occupants of all four units were displaced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
