A 79-year-old man was brought into custody Wednesday and now faces charges after allegedly pointing a gun at an officer, which led to a standoff in the 1000 block of Bluemont Ave.

According to the Riley County Police Department, an officer was out with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. The officer was approached by Stanley Hoerman, who was uninvolved, and proceeded to point a gun at the officer. Additional officers were called out and the person originally engaged with the officer was placed in a nearby patrol car for their own safety. Hoerman was also arrested on Dec. 1 for a similar incident after police reported he threatened an officer with a gun.

A mental health co-responder as well as officers from the K-State Police Department also responded. After about one hour of negotiations to peacefully resolve the situation, Hoerman displayed two separate weapons to officers. That’s when RCPD deployed three impact munitions (rubber bullets), said to be less-lethal, which struck Hoerman and allowed officers to approach and take him into custody.

Hoerman was transported to Ascension Via Christi for further evaluation and later released into RCPD custody. He remains in custody and is charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer. He is currently being held in lieu of bond.

Original story 2 p.m. Wednesday

A 79-year-old man was brought into custody Wednesday following a brief standoff with police in the 1000 block of Bluemont Ave.

The Riley County Police Department says the man was experiencing a mental health crisis. Several officers from RCPD, including its mental health co-responder and K-State Police negotiated with the armed man for about an hour. A perimeter was established between 10th and 11th Street as several onlookers gathered around the scene.

Shortly after noon, the standoff ended as he appeared to retreat from his truck, and officers fired two 40 mm rubber bullets from what they say was a non-lethal device. The man fell to the ground. He was then taken by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

RCPD Public Information Officer Aaron Wintermote says the man had two guns in his possession.

Further details are pending from RCPD.
