Update: Riley County monitoring eight active cases of COVID-19, after two new cases announced

Riley County continues to see a flattening of the coronavirus curve.

Health Department Director and local health officer Julie Gibbs says just one new positive case came in over the weekend. It was only the second reported case in well over a week. Another case was confirmed by late Tuesday afternoon, bringing the county’s total since mid-March to 63 cases.

“Most of those have recovered. We did have the one fatality unfortunately a couple weeks ago, but we only have seven active cases right now, so we’re definitely seeing that downward trend, which is exactly what we want to see,” she said.

Gibbs says there has been an upward trend in testing. Even so, there are still worries, following the Memorial Day holiday, especially after large gatherings made national headlines in nearby Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. Gibbs says it’s a reminder that adhering to health guidelines is especially critical to maintain the downward trend locally.

“This is not gone yet. I think a lot of people just think that since we’re seeing that downward trend, and we haven’t seen a lot of cases lately, but it’s still here. So we want to keep social distancing, good hand hygiene, wearing masks, that sort of thing,” she said.

Phase two of the state’s and Riley County’s reopening plan began on Friday and the county is still targeting phase three to begin on June 8th. Gibbs says she’s been impressed by the measured approach businesses seem to be taking.

“I really think it’s happening in a very controlled, careful matter. A lot of businesses are not only looking out for their customers, but their patrons as well. I think it’s been a good reopening,” she said.
