An arraignment was set for a Fort Riley soldier charged in connection with the first degree murder of a young child.
Alexander McConnell appeared in Riley County District Court, alongside his attorney, Lora Ingels, Monday afternoon. Prosecuting State Attorney, Kendra Lewison indicated a plea agreement had been reached in the matter.
McConnell chose to waive his right to a preliminary hearing by pleading guilty on all three charges against him. Chief Judge, Meryl Wilson accepted the plea and found McConnell guilty. A sentencing date was set for June 8th at 2:30 p.m.
McConnell was arrested for first degree murder and child abuse back in February of last year. KMAN received an affidavit, which indicated a five week old baby was left alone with McConnell for a short time. The infant sustained several injuries, including internal bleeding and a bruised lung. The child later died from the injuries after being transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
