MCPHERSON, Kan. (AP) A 19-year-old McPherson College football player is charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder in the beating death of a Tabor College football player.
Alton Franklin of Dallas, Texas, made his first appearance Monday in McPherson County District Court in the death of 26-year-old Brandon Brown of Sacramento, Calif.
He is being held on $500,000 bond and will have a preliminary hearing Oct. 3.
The Salina Journal reports Brown was found lying near a street in McPherson just after 4 a.m. Sept. 16 and died Saturday without regaining consciousness.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.
Franklin was suspended from McPherson College after his arrest Saturday, hours before Brown died. A message left with Franklin’s attorney was not immediately returned.
