A power outage in Manhattan Tuesday evening left more than a thousand customers without power and caused traffic issues.

At about six Tuesday evening, KMAN received information from the Riley County Police Department that a tractor trailer struck an electrical pole near the 2200 block of Anderson Avenue and Bellehaven Road.

This caused a power outage stretching east to College Heights Road with reports from residents stating the outage extended to Sunset Avenue. The incident shut down traffic heading west towards Westloop with Riley County Police turning around cars near the KSU Foundation building.

A Westar Energy representative later clarified the report saying the truck clipped a cable line which brought down two power poles at about 5:30pm. Westar intially reported that there were approximately 1,100 customer outages, that number was cut to about 500 outages as the night progressed.

Workers were rerouting the power lines for temporary power use in the area, while repairs were being made early this  morning. The Westar website indicates 278 still without power in Riley County.
