Riley County Commissioners met Monday to discuss a variety of different items on their agenda. One of the biggest being the closing of the Riley County Treasurers office in order for the state wide Motor Vehicle and Drivers Licence system conversion. The office will be closed from May 1st through the 7th and could potentially cause issues for people trying to renew their April tags at the last minute. Eileen King, Riley County Treasurer, had a word of caution of those people who have until April 30th to get their tags renewed.
Do it early.
King said during her meeting with commissioners that residents who want to renew their tags can still use the online system, but it would shut down April 26th in order for the new system to be put in place. King says that residents can also renew their tags through the mail, but if the office does not receive their information before April 27th their tags cannot be processed until May 7th when the system goes live. The office will also not be able to renew drivers licences or state IDs during this time frame.
The Treasurers Office will still being doing taxes during the time that the motor vehicle system is down. King says that the date for those taxes to be due will still remain on May 10th.
The commission also met with Riley County Museum Director Cheryl Collins who spoke about their quarterly dinner meeting Tuesday and also their open house coming up April 29th. The open house will run from 2 p.m. to 5p.m. at the Wolfe House and will feature parts of life in the 1880’s.
The commission heard comments from Rod Harris, a member of the Wildcat Creek Watershed Council. The council is dedicated to educating the community about the importance of saving and slowly re-introducing rain water back into the environment. Harris talked about their Rain Water initiative kick off, which will begin this weekend.
The commission was also advised that April 23rd through the 27th would be National Work Zone Awareness week. Public Works Technician Assistant and Training Coordinator, Dave Ball, told the commission that there will be a display in the Riley County Office building telling the public about worker’s safety during that week.
