On Monday the third annual Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery Memorial Day service took place on a sunlit hill crowded with guests bearing witness to the ceremony.
The Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery’s motto is “No one is ever buried alone, all are buried with honor”, and on Monday those that gave the ultimate sacrifice were honored as family and friends from all over the country gathered to commemorate their service.
Kurt Loupe of Manhattan said the day was special to him. Loupe lost his brother in Vietnam, and appreciated all of those who turned out to remember the fallen.
Retired Colonel Micheal M. Neer was the guest speaker for the ceremony, and wanted to remind his listeners that on Memorial Day it was important to remember those that served to provide safety and security for the nation.
The ceremony featured the placing of a wreath by retired CSM George E Smith of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Isis Shrine Highlanders Bagpipes, and the Wolverine 4-1 BSTB Color Guard. The volley salute was provided by the Kansas Army National Guard military funeral honor guard, and SFC David Carlson of the 35th infantry Division Band played Taps. The singing duet Mended Wings sung the National Anthem.
Cemetery Manager Gwen Seymour thanked everyone who contributed to the ceremony, and wanted to recognize the Kansas Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association for providing their support.
