The Big 12 Conference named K-State redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne as its Rookie of the Week after leading the Wildcats in kills, hitting percentage and digs in a straight-set win over West Virginia Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Heyne, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, collects her second weekly honor of the season after picking up 11 kills while hitting .450 to go with a career-best 10 digs for the first double-double of her career against the Mountaineers. Her 3.67 kills per set and 3.33 digs per set were best among Big 12 freshmen last week.
The 5-foot-11 outside hitter has started the last five matches for the Wildcats, the first starts of her career, leading the team with 54 kills (3.60 per set) while hitting .267 in that stretch. Heyne has led the Cats in kills in three of the last four outings and has reached double-digit kills in four of the last five contests.
The weekly accolade increases K-State’s season total to seven awards, as she along with redshirt junior Sarah Dixon, freshman Gloria Mutiri and redshirt senior Kylee Zumach have each been named players of the week. The Cats’ seven total honors this season are tied for the most in the conference with Baylor and are the most by a K-State team since earning eight weekly awards in 2014.
K-State (13-9, 3-8 Big 12) heads to Austin, Texas, to take on the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns Wednesday. The matchup will air on the Longhorn Network as well as stream live on the ESPN app, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
